While Alzheiner’s is indescriminate relative to age and gender, trends do indicate that age (over 65) can be a factor and women are more susceptable to the disease than men. The cause has to do with nerve damage within the brain. In the most simple of terms Alzheimer’s is caused by either nerves becoming tangled or protein building up within the brain.
Signs of Alzheimer’s
Initial signs of Alzheimer’s are often benign. Forgetting a name, loss of focus, or misplacing your car keys. However, as these instances start to become trends, it’s important that they are not ignored.
Prevention research continues to evolve but the leading directions mirror what you’d hear for maintaining your overall health and well-being: lose weight, stop smoking, manage risk of diabetes and heart disease, and get plenty of exercise. Additional suggestions include continuing to use and expand your mind: do puzzles, play memory games, learn new skills or even a new language. These activities support and even grow new neural pathways which, in some respects, is the opposite trend Alzheimer sufferers experience.
